What is a Microsoft PM?

Since working at Microsoft, I’ve always been a huge fan of how Program Management (PM) has been implemented at that company. Unfortunately, it’s a role that — because of how deeply it is engrained in the Microsoft culture — is very difficult to quantify to non-Microsoft people and very difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Steven Sinofsky, senior V.P. of Microsoft Office, has taken some time in his blog to try to define what a PM is and what a PM does on the Office team. While this might not be completely representative of all PMs within every product-line at Microsoft (again, everything is about adapting to the customers, the product, and the situation at hand), this is still a very good overview of how the role works and what you might expect if you ever were to work for Microsoft as a PM.
